Website optimization refers to the process of ensuring that a given page on your website is deemed by the search engines to be a good match for a particular keyword – since Google, Yahoo and Bing strive to give you the most relevant results, first.
Google’s precise algorithm is a closely guarded secret – plus it changes often! – and supposedly there are more than 100 factors that determine search engine rankings. But the “biggies” are:
RELEVANCE and REPUTATION
Or – what your page says about itself, and what other people say about it.
RELEVANCE is determined by factors such as the name of the page, the words used on the page, the meta-tags (coding) on the page, and so on. For example, if your page’s URL is: http://www.widgets.com/wonderwidget/
then Google thinks that page is probably a good match for someone looking for widgets.
My WEBSITE OPTIMIZATION service is geared towards examining your site itself and making improvements to the text and coding, in order to make it more visible in the free search engine listings. I’ll look at title and meta tags, image alt tags, and suggest additional content if necessary. I’ll also give you some internal linking strategies and double-check to see that all your pages are indexed.
I DO recommend link building services in addition to most website optimization projects. That’s because the second “biggie” factor is REPUTATION, which is a function of backlinks – the sites and directories and blogs and forums who mention your site (or a page on your site), especially in conjunction with a particular keyword.
For example, if I say “Mary sells awesome widgets” – and the word widget is a hyperlink – that’s a backlink from my site to yours. Generally speaking, the more links to your site, the higher it will rank. (And the more competitive your search term is, the more links you’ll need.)
